FACT
Event,
item of information, or state of affairs existing, observed, or known to have
happened, and which is confirmed or validated to such an extent that it is
considered 'reality.' See also assumption, rule of thumb, and science.
Fact
is something that is empirically true and can be supported by evidence.
A
subjective fact can communicate how someone is feeling. If a person says he's
feeling sad, that is a subjective fact about his emotional state. A fact can safely be defined as a true
belief.
Belief
is synonymous with opinion, so someone who makes a factual statement also holds
an opinion that the fact is true. Therefore
all facts are accompanied by an opinion.
THEORY
A
theory is a supposition or explanation based on observed data. It may or may not be true.
A
theory is a set of interrelated construction (variables) definitions and
propositions that presents a systematic view of phenomena by specifying
relations among variables.
The term theory is used with surprising
frequency in everyday language. It is
often used in to mean a guess, hunch or supposition. You may even hear people dismiss certain information
because it is only a theory.
It
is important to note as you study psychology and other scientific topics, that
a theory in science is not the same as the colloquial use of the term.
